Potting soil tips

After seeds, the next essential supply to starting your own garden plants is potting soil. Acquiring soil could be trickier this spring, but there is a good supply at our local stores.

Types of potting soil

You do not need special potting soil to get going with seed starting because the plants do not spend much of their life in that soil. Most any regular potting soil is suitable for any of the seed starting methods; traditional, winter sown or wicking containers. Do not worry if you are acquiring soil that is less costly.

Ironically, “Seed starting mixes” can confuse the issue and if you are trying to keep things simple, they may be less desirable. Seed starting mix does not typically have fertilizers added. As your plants grow, you may need to supplement with fertilizer. If this seems fussy to you, then opt for the regular potting soil that has nutrients included.

Can you use soil from your yard or straight compost? No, these will be too wet. Chances are that your seeds will rot, or your plants will get a fungal issue if garden soil or straight compost is used. Opt for the potting soil. Potting soils have ingredients that improve the soil’s texture.
