Seedling Corps volunteers for summertime pollinator plant care are needed
Have a Green Thumb?
Join other Hamline Midway community members and become “Seedling Corps” member! Grow pollinator plants or trees at home that will be planted at Pierce Butler Meadow later this year. This is an easy way to get involved in the local movement to restore native plants and pollinators to the Hamline Midway area and make a positive impact on our local environment.
Background
For the past couple of seasons, Hamline Midway neighbors have been collecting native pollinator plant seeds and germinating them in “winter sown” containers in order to supplement the plantings at Pierce Butler Meadow (PBM). PBM is a community driven natural area that has been supported by community members since 2017. For 2022, the HMC Environment Committee and the stewards of Piece Butler Meadow are looking for 10-12 neighborhood “green thumbs” to adopt some of the plant growing by becoming one of the “Seedling Corps”! By growing our own plants, we are able to save money, install plants that are adapted to this hyper-local area, and involve more of our community!
The Role of a Seedling Corps Member:
Late spring 2022, Seedling Corps members will receive 10-20 upcycled lettuce box containers of newly emerged seedlings. These plants will have been started by other community members.
From spring to fall, monitor the plants and water daily.
Repot plants into potting soil during the season at least one time.
Your plants will be collected for planting at Pierce Butler Meadow. (You will be invited to help!)
Requirements to be a Seedling Corps Member:
Some experience gardening or growing trees.
An approximately 3 ft x 10 ft of yard space where you live or work for the plants to be during the summer.
Use good practices to avoid jumping worm transmission. Help and training for this will be available. Mostly, containers need to be elevated to avoid contact with the ground.
Ability to water the seedlings or tree pots every day. And if you are gone, willingness to arrange substitute waterers (HMEC may be able to help as subs).
Potentially provide irrigation supplies and cover all water expenses (TBD).
